 Definition of Narrative Text

Narrative Text is a type of text that tells an imaginary/fictional story with the aim of entertaining a chronologically related one. As an imaginary story, Narrative Text is not necessarily true, because it is only based on the imagination of a person or group of people that is not proven true.


Social Function of Narrative Text

The social function of narrative text is to entertain readers with the fiction story like: fable, legend, myth, and folktale.



Characteristic of Narrative Text

1. Narrative Text tells a story in the past.

2. Using nouns to replace pronouns for animals, people, or things in the story. (The dwarfs, Carriage, etc.)

3. More of a folk tale or already known and developed in the community as a shared story although it can be retold in different versions of the story. (Malin Kundang/ Indonesia: Tanggang/ Malaysia)

4. The elements of the story consist of the setting of time and place, the theme of the story, the characters of the story, the atmosphere of the story, the conflict and the resolution.

5. Can be arranged into a simple sequence or composed of several complex sequences.


Types of Narrative Text

-Fable : Stories that tell about animals.

-Myth : This story or myth is widely developed in society and is generally considered to be a factual story or actually happened.

-Legend : Folklore that tells how the origin of a place that exists.

-Folktale : Stories that are told from generation to generation so that they become a part of the community's tradition.

-Fairy tales : Folk tales or children's stories which contain elements of the miracle/impossibility of the characters in the story and at the end contains a moral message.

-Love story : A love story emphasizes the theme of the story which contains the struggle to get love for the main character.



In addition, there are other types such as: Science fiction, Horror, Mystery, History, Slice of life, Personal experience, etc. 


Language Features of Narrative Text : 

  • Using Action Verbs in Past Tenses. 
  • Using certain nouns as personal pronouns. 
  • Using adjectives that form a noun phrase. 
  • Use conjunctions to order events. 
  • Use Adverb of time 
  • Use time conjunction


The Structure of Narrative Text

Orientation

Orientation or commonly referred to as the introduction, contains about who, when, where a story is set. 

Complications

Complications tell the beginning of the problem that causes the peak of the problem or what is commonly called the climax. This section usually involves the main character of the story. 

Resolution

This part is the end of the story or a solution to the problem that occurs. Problems can be solved for better or worse which will make the story have a happy ending or vice versa. 

Re-orientation

Section is the closing of a story that contains about it. Re-orientation can contain moral lessons, suggestions or teachings from the author.


EXAMPLE :

Bawang Merah and Bawang Putih

Once upon a time, there lived a beautiful girl with her father, her stepmother, and her stepsister. One day, her father passed away. Her stepmother and stepsister treated her very bad whereas they used to love her before her father died. She had to do all the house work.

On the morning day, Bawang Putih went to the river to wash a lot of clothes. Then she saw a goldfish needed a help. Its mouth was stuck on a hook. Bawang Putih felt sorry and helped the poor goldfish.

“Thank you for your kindness”, the goldfish said.

Bawang Putih was very surprised that the goldfish could speak. However the goldfish helped her to wash the clothes and they became best friend.

Unfortunately, Bawang Merah her stepsister knew about the goldfish. She caught the goldfish and gave it to her mom. After that, they cooked it and ate it. When Bawang Putih knew it, she took the bone and buried it. She felt very sad that she could not take care of her best friend.

Several days later, grew a beautiful tree on the burial. Surprisingly, a Prince came to see it. he needed the tree to make his father well again. When he asked who own the tree, Bawang Merah said that it was hers. However, when she wanted to pull the tree, she could not do it. Even everyone could not do it, but Bawang Putih. Bawang Putih pull the tree easily and gave it to the Prince.

The Prince married Bawang Putih. She forgave her stepmother and stepsister and they lived happily ever after


Exercise :


“The Snow White And Seven Dwarfs”



One day, there was a queen sitting close to a very stunning window whereas tailoring and seeing the snow. Accidentally, her finger was cut by a stitching needle so 3 drops of blood dripped out. The drops of blood fell down on the snow. The red color of the blood that was stuck within the white of the snow looked terribly pretty. Suddenly the queen thought “If solely I had a toddler whose skin was as white as snow and whose lips were as red as blood”.


as the time glided by, finally a queen gave birth to a really pretty princess whose skin was as white as snow and whose lips were as red as blood. The queen grew up as a really pretty and kind-hearted woman. She was referred to as Snow White. However, once Snow White was regarding teenagers, the queen died owing to Associate in Nursing sickness. Once the queen’s death, the king married once more. This new queen was wicked and despised Snow white. The queen gave orders that Snow White was to be treated as a servant.


Everyday the queen stood ahead of her magic mirror while asking “Who is the most stunning lady within the land?” and also the mirror continually answered, “You are the foremost stunning one in all all.” The new queen asked constant questions everyday and also the mirror continuously answered the constant factor. However one day the mirror answered that the queen was so stunning however Snow White was rather more stunning than the queen. It created the queen so angry that she gave orders to at least one of her Huntsmen to require Snow White into the woods and kill her.


The huntsman had such a short heart that he couldn’t do the deed. He told her to run away. In her fleeing into the woods, she found an area in which seven dwarfs lived. Their house was tiny and strange. Snow White entered the insufficient house and located it terribly untidy. Then, she began to shut down the whole house. upstairs she found seven very little beds. She was so exhausted that she stretched on one in all the beds. Shortly then, she was asleep on the bed.


When the Dwarfs came home they were shocked to seek out Snow White and after some argument, they set to let her keep. She is secure to cook and look after them. She lived there happily.


Unfortunately, The Queen discovered the place wherever Snow White was living and disguising herself as a witch. She then took a poisoned apple and kicked it off for the Dwarfs bungalow. She gave Snow White the poisoned apple to eat and as presently as she bit the apple, she sank into a state of mind.


Thinking she was dead, the Dwarfs engineered a glass coffin and placed her in it. For days she lay within the forest in her glass coffin. One day, the prince was riding through the forest searching for Snow White and located her. He leaned over and kissed her. She opened her eyes and sat up with a smile. everybody was happy at that point. The prince took Snow White to his palace wherever they were married and lived merrily ever once.

  4. using adverd and adverbial phrase to indicate the location of an incident or event such as : lived merrily ever once
